Why Your CV Isn’t Enough Anymore — And What Actually Matters

Hi, I’m Astrid Steingrüber – as a business coach, I support women in the Munich area in achieving their professional goals with clarity, confidence, and strategy. About me …

It’s Monday morning. You open ChatGPT, feed in your experience, and generate a “polished, compelling” CV. Ten minutes later, you have a flawless document. You feel prepared.

Here’s the problem: thousands of other candidates are doing exactly the same thing, right now.

The Dilemma of the AI-Optimized Application

We’re in the middle of a quiet revolution in hiring — happening on both sides of the table. Candidates use AI tools to polish resumes and cover letters. At the same time, companies deploy AI-powered Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter through exactly these applications.

The result? An arms race. Applications keep getting technically better — and increasingly indistinguishable from one another. The AI on the candidate side keeps learning. The AI on the hiring side keeps learning too. Paradoxically, this means too many nearly identical, highly optimized candidate profiles keep advancing to the next round. And then what? Eventually, a human still has to make the final call — and finds no real differentiation to go on.

For hiring teams, this means: more applications, more effort, less actual signal. For candidates, it means frustration — despite a “perfect” application, the callbacks don’t come.

The Real Question: How Do You Stand Out in a World of Sameness?

From my experience as a leadership coach and sparring partner for executives and candidates alike, the answer isn’t a better AI prompt. It’s something no AI can (yet) authentically replicate: genuine, individual connection and a clear, personal story.

A few concrete ways this can play out:

  • Deep research on the company — not just the website, but recent interviews, podcasts, or posts from employees or leaders.
  • Targeted networking: Is there a real person at the company you can reach through your network? A short, honest conversation beats any optimized application.
  • Strategic LinkedIn outreach: Instead of applying anonymously, reach out directly to decision-makers — with a clear, individual message instead of a copy-paste template.
  • A recognizable personal positioning that sparks curiosity before the first real contact even happens.

This path is riskier than the safe, standardized route. But that’s exactly what makes it effective. Standing out requires being willing to show up — not hide behind a perfectly optimized document.

The Direct Link to Personal Branding and Storytelling

This is exactly where my work has focused for years. Personal Branding and Storytelling aren’t new trend topics for me — they’re at the core of what I do with executives and candidates alike, and have been throughout my career as a coach.

Because the ability to tell your own story clearly, credibly, and distinctly now determines, more than ever:

  • How you’re perceived in a hiring process — beyond keywords and ATS compatibility.
  • How you’re perceived as a leader, internally and externally — your executive presence, credibility, and influence.
  • How sustainably you build trust — with recruiters, teams, and stakeholders alike.

A strong personal brand isn’t a marketing gimmick. It’s the foundation that makes people listen to you, trust you, and remember you — long before any AI enters the equation.

What Does This Mean for You?

Whether you’re navigating a career transition or looking to strengthen your leadership presence within your organization, the underlying question stays the same:

What makes you unmistakably you — and are you telling that story clearly enough?

An optimized CV might get you past the first AI filter. But only a clear, authentic personal brand and a compelling story get you into the conversation — and into the position you actually want.

I help executives and candidates develop exactly this kind of clarity: a personal brand that holds up, and a story that sticks — whether in a hiring process, in everyday leadership, or in your next career move.
